Upland Brewing Company Announces Expansion

BLOOMINGTON, IN, SEPTEMBER 6, 2006

Incoming president Douglas G. Dayhoff announced a major expansion of Bloomington's Upland Brewing Company today.

Upland's goal is to establish itself as a major craft-beer label in the Midwest. "Upland makes superb beer," Dayhoff states. "And that great beer is the basis of everything we hope to accomplish."

First on the expansion list are two sixty-barrel fermenters that will add over fifty percent to the existing capacity. Presently the largest craft brewery in Indiana, Upland sells over 140,000 gallons of beer in restaurants, bars, and liquor stores throughout the state. "In many cases we perform just behind Bud Light and Miller Lite on taps," Dayhoff notes. "This is fascinating when you consider that they outspend us in marketing dollars by about ten million to one."

"Upland has a remarkable team in place from top to bottom," Dayhoff states. "They make it easy to be excited about the work we do. Caleb Staton is simply one of the best young brewers in the country," he asserts. "I can't wait to see how he'll perform with an additional 70,000 gallons of brewing capacity."

Expansion, however, does not mean leaving Upland's present 11th Street location on the northwest of downtown. "This company has received tremendous support from the Bloomington community," Dayhoff states. "We try to reciprocate that support." Some examples raised were the Upland Taproom and Biergarten that utilizes locally grown produce and meats, and the regular contributions the company makes to a wide array of local organizations, such as WFHB, Harmony School, and the Sycamore Land Trust. "We appreciate the loyalty that the customers, retailers, restaurants, and bars that serve our beer have shown us over the years," he asserts.

Expanded distribution is also planned. "We get a lot of demand from out of state customers," Dayhoff notes. Although he does not commit to specifics, other than to point to Chicago and Louisville as prime new distribution areas, Dayhoff sounds a positive note. "I think our loyal ex-pats and other beer lovers outside of Indiana will start finding Upland beer appearing in taverns and on shelves in a lot of locales in the near future."

Outgoing president, and Upland's founder, Marc Sattinger, expresses satisfaction with the planned expansion, with one notable exception. "My goal was to retire at age 55," Sattinger relates. "I missed it by one week."
